November Meeting: The Medical Marijuana Industry in Pennsylvania

The November Chapter Meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at the Doubletree Guest Suites in Plymouth Meeting, PA. The Board of Directors will meet at 5:30 pm; all ASA members are welcome. The general meeting starts at 6:30. The guest speaker will be Dr. Jonathan Gusdorff, DO, Medical Director and Managing Partner of the Firefly Dispensaries in south central Pennsylvania. Dr. Gusdorff will discuss “The Medical Marijuana Industry in Pennsylvania.”

Dr. Gusdorff is the rare physician who succeeds both in medicine and in business. After a decade as a practicing neuroradiologist, clinic Director, and Associate Professor at Oklahoma State University Medical Center, he co-founded CareSTAT Urgent Care Centers, which he sold successfully after three years. Today, Dr. Gusdorff is growing Firefly Dispensaries, which serves patients in the Pennsylvania medical marijuana program.

Dr. Gusdorff followed up his B.A. in Psychology from Hofstra University with post-baccalaureate pre-med studies at Columbia University in New York. He earned his DO at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he also served an Internship. After a Residency in Diagnostic Radiology at the Bryn Mawr Hospital and a Fellowship in Neuroradiology at the Emory University School of Medicine, Dr. Gusdorff worked in Neuroradiology for a decade before co-founding CareSTAT Urgent Care Centers.

Dr. Gusdorff will talk about the market for medical marijuana -- who can benefit from using it -- about the business model and the regulatory environment, and whether the growing market for medical marijuana will provide a steppingstone to recreational legalization. Dr. Gusdorff’s presentation is sure to be of interest to ASA members in all disciplines. September Meeting: The Real Estate Market and Valuation Issues

The September Chapter Meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at the Doubletree Guest Suites in Plymouth Meeting, PA. The Board of Directors will meet at 5:30 pm; all ASA members are welcome. The general meeting starts at 6:30. It will include the installation of the 2016-2017 Chapter Officers and presentation of the 2016 George D. Sinclair Award.

Neil F. Axler
The guest speaker will be Neil F. Axler, a Director at RSM US LLP’s New York office specializing in Real Estate Valuation Services. He will talk about “The State of the Real Estate Market and Current Valuation Issues.” A graduate of Clarion University of Pennsylvania, Mr. Axler’s career path included stops at Arthur Andersen, Deloitte, Marshall & Stevens, and most recently at FMV Opinions.

With over 20 years of valuation consulting experience here and abroad, Mr. Axler’s current projects include valuations for financial reporting; trust and estate; federal government agencies; special servicers; tax appeals; litigation; bankruptcy and restructuring. A popular speaker, panelist and author, he has first-hand knowledge of the economic, financial and market factors that drive the development of public real estate policy.

March Meeting: Emerging Economic Trends

The March Chapter Meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at the Doubletree Guest Suites in Plymouth Meeting, PA. The Board of Directors will meet at 5:00 pm; all ASA members are welcome. The general meeting starts at 6:30. The guest speaker will be Ardy Lynn Wurtzel, Research Associate in the Corporate Affairs Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia.

Ms. Wurtzel, who is also an adjunct faculty member at Temple, Rutgers and Arcadia Universities, holds a B.A. in economics and finance from Temple’s Fox School of Business, and an M.A. in economics, also from Temple.

At the Bank, Ms. Wurtzel manages economic data sets and conducts research on current economic trends. She also delivers presentations for the Bank to the business and banking community on emerging economic trends.

The Philadelphia Chapter of the American Society of Appraisers (ASA) will hold its annual Business Valuation Seminar at the Doubletree Guest Suites Hotel in Plymouth Meeting, PA on Friday, April 24, 2015.  The program includes sessions focused on

Fees. Early Bird fees, which apply when registration forms and payments are submitted by March 13, are $310 for ASA Members, $340 for all others. Christopher Mercer (Peabody Publishing LP, 2014).

September Meeting: Private Company Valuation Trends

The September Chapter Meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at the Doubletree Guest Suites in Plymouth Meeting, PA. The Board of Directors will meet at 5:00 pm; all ASA members are welcome. The general meeting starts at 6:30.

The guest speaker will be Bob Wegbreit, one of three partners in the West Conshohocken firm of GF Data Resources, LLC. GF Data provides valuation data on middle-market transactions backed by private equity. He will talk about “Private Company Valuation Trends: 2014 Mid-Year State of the Lower Middle Market.”

Mr. Wegbreit is a marketing and strategy specialist working in categories of printing and publishing, web-based business solutions, home services and channel distribution. He has a B.S. from Boston University, and was a Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the Dismar Corporation, a national point-of-sale advertising manufacturer.

Bob will discuss proprietary valuation and cost of capital information from GF Data’s mid-year benchmarking reports. The reports, considered among the most reliable, describe completed acquisitions valued between $10-250 million. They include confidential transaction details contributed by over 220 North American private equity firms.

The March Chapter Meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at the Doubletree Guest Suites in Plymouth Meeting, PA. The Board of Directors will meet at 5:00 pm; all ASA members are welcome. The general meeting starts at 6:30. The guest speaker will be Curtis L. Golkow, Esq. of the eponymous Philadelphia firm of Golkow Business Law LLC. Mr. Golkow will discuss “Buy-Sell Agreements.”

Mr. Golkow, who holds a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School of Business and a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, has drafted and negotiated many buy-sell agreements, including model buy-sell provisions for Pennsylvania LLCs as a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s PA LLC Forms Committee Task Force. He has also served as an expert witness regarding buy-sell agreements, and is a frequent speaker and lecturer on the topic.

Because appraisers and attorneys are often among the first professionals consulted whenever a business is bought or sold, Mr. Golkow’s presentation is sure to be of interest to ASA members in virtually all disciplines. 2-Hr. Pennsylvania Appraisal Law Course

The Philadelphia Chapter of the American Society of Appraisers will sponsor a two-hour Pennsylvania Appraisers/Assessors Law Certification Course on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 from 4:00-6:00 pm at the Doubletree Guest Suites at 640 West Germantown Pike, Plymouth Meeting, PA 19462 (Telephone: 610-834-8300). The instructor will be Robert J. Luciani, ASA.

The class covers required topics of the Pennsylvania Real Estate Appraisers Certification Act and the Assessors Certification Law, and the Regulations of the Pennsylvania State Board of Certified Real Estate Appraisers.  It emphasizes changes to the laws made during the past two years, and offers a refresher on the provisions most relevant to everyday practice.

The Pennsylvania State Board of Certified Real Estate Appraisers requires biennial recertification for State Licensed Appraisers and Assessors, with all certificates expiring on June 30 of odd-numbered years (6/30/13).  This class meets the specific requirement for two (2) appraisal re-certification hours on the Real Estate Appraisers Certification Act.​

Please register early for this mandatory class which qualifies for two hours of Continuing Education Credit for Pennsylvania Licensed Appraisers and Assessors.

The September Chapter Meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at the Doubletree Guest Suites in Plymouth Meeting, PA. The Board of Directors will meet at 5:00 pm; all ASA members are welcome. The general meeting starts at 6:30. The guest speaker will be John J. Barton, ASA, CPA  of Brandywine Valuation Consultants, LLC. Mr. Barton will talk about The Strategic Direction of ASA and its Chapter Structure.

John Barton performs valuations for transactions, tax matters, corporate restructuring, and litigation.  A graduate of LaSalle and Fordham Universities with a masters in literature (Fordham) and an M.B.A. in Finance and Accounting, he is an adjunct instructor of finance in Villanova University’s MBA Program. He is also an instructor of ASA Principles of Valuation courses both here and abroad.

Mr. Barton is the current Chairman of ASA’s Business Valuation Committee, and also serves on the International Membership Committee, as well as on a Subcommittee, the Board of Examiners. He is a Practitioners’ Publishing Company author and a frequent speaker at professional societies on valuation topics.

April: Business Valuation Seminar

The Philadelphia ASA Chapter is sponsoring a daylong Business Valuation SeminarBusiness Valuation Seminar, Doubletree Hotel, Plymouth Meeting, April 18, 2008 on Friday, April 18, 2008 starting at 8:30 am (registration: 8:00 am) at the Doubletree Guest Suites Hotel in Plymouth Meeting, PA. Daniel R. Van Vleet, ASA, Managing Director at Duff & Phelps in Chicago, will discuss his SEAM Model for S Corporation valuation. A nationally recognized expert on the valuation of businesses, fractional equity interests, S Corporations, and other pass-through entities, Mr, Van Vleet is the author of many articles on advanced business valuation concepts and a contributor to several valuation textbooks.

1:15 PM: Blockage Discounts -- Where Theory & Practice Meet
Lester Barenbaum, Ph.D., Managing Director at Financial Research Associates in Bala Cynwyd and Professor of Finance at La Salle University, and Walter Schubert Ph.D., also a Professor of Finance at Lasalle University, will discuss blockage discounts and the recent Court decisions that have pushed the concept from a notion to an empirically determined discount. Popular guest speakers, Messrs. Barenbaum and Schubert are, with Robert Feder, co-authors of The Family Lawyer's Guide to Stock Options published by the American Bar Association (2007).

2:45 PM: Trapped-In Capital Gains
John J. Barton, ASA, the Principal of Brandywine Valuation Consultants in Lyndell, PA, will discuss trapped-in capital gains in the valuation of C and S Corporations and partnerships. Active in the ASA, Mr. Barton currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Business Valuation Committee, and has taught ASA valuation courses around the world. A frequent speaker at professional meetings and conferences, he has written for Practitioners' Publishing Company.
4:00 PM: An Insider’s Understanding of Real Estate Appraisals
John E. Doyle, MAI of Doyle Real Estate Advisors in Philadelphia will examine real estate appraisals from a business valuation viewpoint. Licensed in 11 states, Mr. Doyle serves as a reviewer of commercial appraiser reports for HUD. He has also has provided legal testimony and case management service for many of Philadelphia's largest law firms.
